Our Work
TRANSFORMING
LIVES
dancing people

The Church Urban Fund is a not-for-profit organisation supporting social action in the poorest parts of England. Through our work we support local organisations working to tackle the effects of poverty in their communities and make a real difference to the lives of those around them.

The Church Urban Fund supports local community projects by providing:
  • Funding towards costs incurred by community projects, from building work to salaries and general running costs, as well as small grants for new projects
  • Practical advice and information to help projects to be sustainable and to make a long-lasting difference to their communities
  • A platform from which to make themselves heard at national level
Resourcing Sustainability
This support combines to create an effective resource helping local organisations to develop sustaible projects that help people to climb out of the trap of deprivation. We work to see the crippling effects of poverty eliminated in this country.

Giving new projects a head start
We have invested in many projects from their outset, helping them get off the ground, and we look for our support to lever in additional funding from other sources. The Mustard Seed Effect highlights how the money we give to many projects at an early stage can have a dramatic effect on the life and development of the project.

How do we choose which projects to fund?
Unfortunately we do not have infinite financial resources and need to prioritise the projects we fund. We use a combination of grassroots knowledge through the local Church of England dioceses and the national poverty statistics provided by the Indices of Multiple Deprivation (this link opens in a new window) in order to prioritise projects that are serving the communities most in need. We support groups working in both urban and rural areas.
